The short answer
Saquon Barkley was born February 9, 1997 in The Bronx, New York. His family moved to Coplay, Pennsylvania when he was 4 years old. He grew up in the Lehigh Valley, attended Whitehall High School (Whitehall Township, PA), starred at running back, then signed with Penn State β€” the homestate Big Ten program.

Bronx beginnings, Pennsylvania upbringing

Saquon was born in the Bronx to Alibay Barkley (a former amateur boxer) and Tonya Johnson. The family lived in the Bronx until Saquon was about 4, then moved to Coplay β€” a small borough of about 3,300 people in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. The move was driven by Tonya’s desire for a safer, more affordable place to raise her family. Saquon’s father stayed close to the family despite their separation.

Saquon attended Whitehall High School (Whitehall Township, PA, enrollment around 1,500) β€” the local public high school. He was a multi-sport star: football, basketball, and track. As a senior in 2014, he rushed for 1,856 yards and 31 touchdowns, was named Pennsylvania Class 4A Player of the Year, and was a top-100 national football recruit. Penn State head coach James Franklin recruited him hard despite Saquon’s late offer from the program.

Penn State, 2015-17

Saquon committed to Penn State over Rutgers in February 2014 β€” partly because his older brother had also stayed in Pennsylvania for college. He played three years (2015-17) and was a unanimous All-American as a junior in 2017. Career stats: 671 carries, 3,843 rushing yards (5.7 ypc), 43 rushing TDs, 102 receptions, 1,195 receiving yards. He was a Heisman finalist in 2017 (4th in voting).

He left Penn State after his junior season for the 2018 NFL Draft. The New York Giants selected him #2 overall β€” the highest a running back had been drafted in 12 years. He won 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, made his first Pro Bowl, and immediately became the face of Giants football for the next 6 seasons.

Coplay native, Eagles star

Saquon spent six seasons (2018-23) with the New York Giants. Injury issues and contract disputes led to his free-agent departure after 2023. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2024 β€” a move that became one of the most-discussed free-agent decisions of the cycle (he chose the rival Eagles over the Texans and a Giants return). He led the NFL in rushing yards (2,005) in 2024, was named First-Team All-Pro, won 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX (February 2025).

Whitehall High School retired Saquon’s #21 jersey in summer 2018 β€” between his Penn State graduation and his rookie NFL season. The Lehigh Valley region holds an annual Saquon Barkley youth football camp, and Saquon’s foundation funds Lehigh Valley youth athletic programming.
