Michael Jordan's perfect 6-for-6
Michael Jordan reached the NBA Finals six times β all with the Chicago Bulls β and won the championship + Finals MVP every single time. The years: 1991 (over the Lakers), 1992 (over the Trail Blazers), 1993 (over the Suns), 1996 (over the Sonics), 1997 (over the Jazz), 1998 (over the Jazz). The 6-for-6 perfect Finals record is statistically unmatched and probably will be forever β every other multi-Finals winner has lost at least one Finals.
Jordan retired three times. His first retirement (1993) came after his father’s murder; his second (1999) after the second three-peat; his third (2003) after a Wizards comeback. The Bulls never reached the NBA Finals without Jordan and the team’s competitive window closed completely after his second retirement. Jordan’s six Finals MVPs are the standard against which every modern superstar is measured.
LeBron James, Shaq, and Tim Duncan
LeBron James has won 4 NBA Finals MVPs (2012 with Heat, 2013 with Heat, 2016 with Cavaliers, 2020 with Lakers) across 10 NBA Finals appearances. His 6-4 series record is the second-most Finals appearances ever (behind Bill Russell’s 12). Shaquille O’Neal won 3 consecutive Finals MVPs (2000, 2001, 2002 β all with the Lakers). Tim Duncan won 3 (1999, 2003, 2005) over a 6-year span with the Spurs.
Other multi-winners: Magic Johnson (3 β 1980, 1982, 1987), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (2 β 1971, 1985), Kobe Bryant (2 β 2009, 2010), Hakeem Olajuwon (2 β 1994, 1995), Larry Bird (2 β 1984, 1986), Kawhi Leonard (2 β 2014 SAS, 2019 TOR β the only player ever to win Finals MVP with two different franchises). The award has been given annually since 1969; before that, the Finals didn’t have a separate MVP.
Recent Finals MVP winners (2020-2025)
2020: LeBron James (Lakers in the COVID bubble vs. Heat). 2021: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks vs. Suns β his first championship). 2022: Stephen Curry (Warriors vs. Celtics β his first Finals MVP after 4 championships). 2023: Nikola Jokic (Nuggets vs. Heat β his first championship). 2024: Jaylen Brown (Celtics vs. Mavericks β Tatum the conventional pick, voters chose Brown). 2025: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Thunder vs. Pacers β his first championship).
Stephen Curry winning Finals MVP only in 2022 β his 4th of 4 championships at the time β is a striking historical anomaly. Curry was on Warriors teams that won 2015 (Andre Iguodala won Finals MVP), 2017 + 2018 (Kevin Durant won both), and 2022 (Curry’s first). Curry is the only modern superstar with multiple championships but only one Finals MVP.
