Cam Ward's path to #1 overall
Cam Ward was born March 29, 2002 in West Columbia, Texas. He went unranked as a high school recruit (a 0-star) and signed with FCS-level Incarnate Word in San Antonio. He played two seasons at Incarnate Word (2020-21), winning the 2021 Jerry Rice Award as the FCS Freshman of the Year, then transferred up to Washington State for 2022-23 where he started two years and threw for 6,968 yards.
He transferred again — to Miami — for his final college season in 2024. Ward broke Miami’s single-season passing TD record (39) and was a Heisman finalist (4th in voting). The Tennessee Titans owned the #1 pick after a 3-14 2024 season; they spent April 2025 publicly debating Ward vs. trading the pick, ultimately announcing Ward as the selection.
The 2025 NFL Draft top 10
1. Cam Ward, QB, Miami → Tennessee Titans. 2. Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado → Cleveland Browns (after a trade up from #2 with the Jaguars; Hunter was the most-debated 2-way prospect since Champ Bailey). 3. Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State → New York Giants. 4. Will Campbell, OT, LSU → New England Patriots. 5. Mason Graham, DT, Michigan → Cleveland Browns (via Jaguars).
Other top 10: 6. Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State → Las Vegas Raiders. 7. Armand Membou, OT, Missouri → New York Jets. 8. Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona → Carolina Panthers. 9. Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas → New Orleans Saints. 10. Jared Warren, OT, Tennessee → Chicago Bears.
Cam Ward's rookie season (2025)
Cam Ward was named the Tennessee Titans Week 1 starter for the 2025 season — his rookie debut against the Denver Broncos. The Titans had drafted him to lead a complete rebuild around an offense gutted by the trade of WR DeAndre Hopkins and the retirement of QB Ryan Tannehill. Tennessee’s 2025 season is being measured by Ward’s development rather than wins.
The 2025 NFL Draft pre-draft rankings made Cam Ward + Travis Hunter the most-debated 1-2 of any draft since 1998 (Manning vs. Leaf). Hunter’s two-way play (he played both wide receiver AND cornerback at Colorado) made him a generational evaluation problem; the Titans ultimately chose to take the QB. Whether that’s the right pick will be debated through the late 2020s.
