Los Angeles faces a succession question after Anze Kopitar's announced retirement following this season.

Drew Doughty is in talks with the Los Angeles Kings on a contract extension, per reports, as the franchise prepares for life after captain Anze Kopitar. Kopitar announced he will retire following the 2025-26 season. Doughty, 36, has two years remaining on his current deal through 2027 and is the Kings' longest-tenured skater after Kopitar's exit.

An extension would anchor the Kings' defense around their veteran defenseman heading into a transitional period. Doughty has logged 18 seasons in Los Angeles since his 2008 debut and posted 5-18-23 in 72 games this regular season.
