Jonathan Isaac never really left. Waived by the Orlando Magic late last month before his $14.5 million salary — $8 million of it guaranteed — came due, Isaac returned to the team on a one-year deal days later, as Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel first reported. The contract was finalized last Wednesday, and NBA.com’s transaction log confirms it’s a minimum-salary deal, since nothing larger could be completed during the July moratorium.
Follow the money and the sequence makes sense. Waiving Isaac cleared the room that let Orlando sign Nikola Vucevic and re-sign Jevon Carter while staying under the second apron, as Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints noted. Bringing Isaac back at the minimum meant Orlando declined the option of stretching his old contract — a move that would have barred him from the roster until 2029 — and instead kept the player while shedding the price.
What Orlando kept matters more than what it saved. Isaac’s numbers last season were modest — 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds in 10 minutes a night across 52 games before a left knee sprain in mid-March ended his year — but box scores have never been how you measure him. In short bursts he remains one of the sport’s genuinely disruptive defenders, the kind of player who erases a possession at the rim or blows up an action on the perimeter without needing a touch on the other end. On a roster built top to bottom around defense, ten good minutes of that a night at the minimum is a bargain most contenders would take.
The frontcourt picture behind Wendell Carter Jr. now runs deep: Goga Bitadze, Vucevic on his one-year, $3.9 million return, and Isaac, with two-way center Colin Castleton retained behind them. None of it required a splash, and all of it fits the same idea — keep the defense whole, keep the books flexible, and let the young core carry the offense forward.
The health caveat travels with Isaac as it always has. But for the roster Orlando is trying to build, this was the quietly correct version of a cost-cutting week: the money left, the defender stayed.
