The Arizona Diamondbacks are a .500 team again. Friday’s 9-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers — covered in full here — pushed Arizona to 47-47, and with the July 31 trade deadline three weeks out, where this team stands matters more than how it got there on a single Friday night.

The shape of the win is worth noting anyway, because it looked like the version of this club that can hang in a wild-card race. Eduardo Rodriguez gave the bullpen a night off with six innings of two-run ball — seven hits, one walk, five strikeouts on 87 pitches — against a Dodgers lineup that opened the game with a Shohei Ohtani home run and managed little after. The offense kept applying pressure the way this roster is built to: Tim Tawa drove in four, Gabriel Moreno added two hits and two RBIs, and Corbin Carroll and Tawa each stole a base. Runs in five different innings, two steals, a starter working ahead — that travels.

The standings math is blunt. The division is a formality: the Dodgers sit at 61-34, 13.5 games clear, and one loss in July changes nothing for them. The wild card is the real conversation, and Arizona is 4.5 back of the final spot after going 5-5 over its last ten. That is close enough that three good weeks put the front office firmly on the buy side, and far enough that three bad ones end the discussion. Two more games at Dodger Stadium this weekend start the clock.

For fantasy purposes, Tawa is the name to watch — he is playing every day, and Friday’s 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and a steal is the kind of line that makes a deep-league add easy to justify. Rodriguez has now given his managers a usable start against the first-place Dodgers and profiles as a reasonable stream candidate his next time out. Carroll’s stolen-base floor remains matchup-proof.
